AGSL Wall Map Collection

The AGSL wall map collection consists of over 300 maps, including a large assortment transferred from the UW-Milwaukee Department of Geography in 2005. The online collection includes pictures and descriptions of all maps that are not too fragile to be photographed. High-resolution photos of non-copyrighted maps are available.

The maps date from the 1890s through the 1980s, and cover a wide range of locations, from the world and continents to nations, regions and metropolitan areas. Map themes range from climate, relief (elevation), land use, and vegetation, to political boundaries, historical events, industrial areas and transportation routes, among other subjects. Many of the maps are in English; other languages represented include Russian, German, and Spanish. The maps were generally designed for classroom use; the symbols and text are large and visible from a distance. Most of the maps are still attached to their original rods and hanging mechanisms.

Wall maps are available for use outside the AGSL by UWM faculty, staff, and students. The collection can be browsed at the AGSL during business hours. Please contact AGSL staff members for more information about maps in the collection, or about any not listed here. Note that the use of rare or copyrighted material is governed by special procedures.
