Images of Russia and Caucasus Region 1929-1933 presents over 700 images of Russia and the central Caucasus including the Republic of Georgia and Dagestan from the William O. William Osgood Field with movie camera and two Svanetian men

William O. Field (1904 - 1994), geographer, pioneer glaciologist, and a member of the American Geographical Society visited the Soviet Union three times between 1929 and 1933. During his first trip in 1929, Field traveled to Svanetia, a remote region in Georgia, located in the southern part of the Central Caucasus. His photographs capture the beauty of some of the highest Caucasus mountain peaks, such as Ushba, Tetnuld, and Shkhara. Field also became interested in the people of the region and documented their life as well as historical churches, towers, and settlements in Svanetia. He returned to the Soviet Union in 1931 and 1933. In addition to visiting Georgia, Field also traveled to Moscow and other Russian cities taking photographs of historical buildings and May 1st celebrations. In 1933 he visited remote areas of Dagestan taking pictures of hillside villages and the Dagestani people.

The Digital Project

The William O. Field Collection consists of film negatives, lantern slides, and photographic prints. The images were scanned from film negatives and slides, when possible. Photographic prints were used as a source for scanning, when negatives were missing or damaged. The resulting digital master files in TIFF format are stored at the UWM Libraries. Access images in JPEG format were created from the TIFF files and uploaded into CONTENTdm software for Web delivery. High resolution digital images or prints can be ordered using the online Image Order form.

The photographs were researched and indexed as part of the project to provide additional points of access. Field's handwritten notes as well as his comments captured by C Suzanne Brown in her book With a Camera in My Hands: William O. Field, Pioneer Glaciologist served as a source of description. Subject headings were assigned using Library of Congress Thesaurus for Graphic Materials. Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names was used to provide geographic location including names of countries, states/provinces, and cities. All place names are shown as they currently appear in the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names.
