About the UWM Photo Collection

To commemorate UWM's 50th anniversary, the UWM Libraries prepared a digital collection of photographs documenting the history of UWM and its predecessor institutions, the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee (formerly the Milwaukee State Teachers College) and the University of Wisconsin Extension Center at Milwaukee. The digital collection assembles images physically located in three separate collections: the George M. Richard photographs of UWM collection (UWM Manuscript Collection 167); the UW-Milwaukee Photographs Collection (UWM Archival Collection 6); and the UWM Dept. of Theatre and Dance records (UWM Archival Collection 85).

George M. Richard Photographs of UWM Collection

The digital collection consists of twenty-two photographs taken by George Richard to illustrate a story titled "UW-Milwaukee: A Photographic Tour" which appeared in the October 1958 issue of Wisconsin Alumnus, magazine of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. The photographs show UWM student Patsy Born and alumnus Robert R. Henzel at several sites, including Baker Field House, the Student Union, the Campus Elementary School (currently the Kunkle Center), Kenwood Hall (currently the Alumni House), and the University Library (currently Mellencamp Hall). The tour concluded with a visit to Professor Goundie's sculpture class in the basement of Mitchell Hall. The finding aid for the archival collection can be found at:

UW-Milwaukee Photographs Collection

The archival collection consists of photographs taken by UW-Milwaukee Photographic Services staff or outside professional photographers. Of the thousands of images in the physical collection, only 646 items were selected for the digital collection. They show aerial views of the eastside campus and the development of its built environment; student life and activities; and athletics, including basketball, soccer, and football. Also included are images of UWM Chancellors, from J. Martin Klotsche to Carlos E. Santiago. The finding aid for the archival collection can be found at:

UWM Dept. of Theatre and Dance Records

The digital collection features sixteen images from four performances staged by UWM's Department of Theatre Arts: Jean Giraudoux's Ondine (1964), Luigi Pirandello's Enrico IV (1966), Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost (1966), and Euripides' The Bacchae (1968). In 1982, the Department of Theatre Arts and the Department of Dance merged into one department. The finding aid for the archival collection can be found at:

The Digital Project

The black-and-white and color photographic prints were scanned using a variety of flatbed scanners. A limited number of 35 mm color slides were also scanned for the project using a Nikon film scanner. The resulting archival TIFF files are stored at the UWM Libraries. Access images were then created from the TIFF files for Web delivery. The collection was built with CONTENTdm digital media management software using Dublin Core metadata. Descriptive metadata was created for each image using controlled vocabulary tools, including LC Thesaurus for Graphic Materials and LC Subject Headings.
