| Artist Bio | Chunlin Liu, known as Runqin (courtesy name), was the last ranking-number-one scholar of imperial examinations. Liu specialized in calligraphy. His standard scripts is well-recognized by artists and collectors. Liu spent two years in Hosei University, Tokyo. After returning from Japan in 1907, Liu served as a member of Advisory Parliament. He refused to work with Xiaoxu Zheng (1860-1938, a supporter of restoring the last emperor, Puyi) but chose to work with three presidents in the beginning of the Republic of China (Shikai Yuan (1859-1916), Shichang Xu (1855-1939), and Kun Cao (1862-1938)). In his late life, Liu lived in Beijing and spent most of his time on writing poems and calligraphy. |

| Main Text | Shi Hui (ca. 370-ca. 310 B.C.) refused to accept the throne of Wei (a state during the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.)) after he successfully assisted King Hui of Wei (ca. 400-ca. 319 B.C.) in carrying out internal reforms. Li Fan retired from the Grand General of Yue (a state during the Spring and Autumn Period, 722-479 B.C.) after he helped King Goujian of Yue defeat other states. During the days when Fan withdraw from society, have Fan ever enjoyed traveling all over the world? (Liu is trying to say that being a hermit who travel around allows Fan to survive from unknown political situation although such lifestyle is what Fan prefers ). |
