| Artist Bio | Xiaoxu Zheng, known as Sunkan (courtesy name) and also Haicang (pseudonym) was born in Fuzhou, China. Zheng was involved in political revolution of Qing dynasty. After collapse of Qing dynasty, he dedicated himself to establishment of Manchukuo. With help from Japan, Zheng restored the last emperor of Qing dynasty, Puyi, and served as the first prime minister in 1932, but soon he found Japanese army had a very different political agenda from his. His relationship with Japan got worse in 1935. Later, he resigned from his position due to many disagreements with Japan. Besides political influence, Zheng’s achievement of poetry and calligraphy is also well-recognized. He was one of the leaders in a Tongguang-style poem group (a group consists of followers of Sung dynasty poets), and his calligraphy deeply influenced the development of calligraphy in Korea and Japan. |
