Description	Between 1947-05-10 and 1947-05-11; This land formerly forested; the natives cleared if for cultivation. Erosion followed. Profile non-skeletal. Gravels 63% in the surface. In fine earth 0.6% CaCo3. Clay 24%. Humus 0.3%. Erosion has been serious and dangerous for the town of Blida, which stands on an old fan. The area now under reforestation control now 146 Ha. The method used: small terraces made, with slight grade to carry away excess water. Fruit trees planted on the terrace: figs, olives, almonds, carobs. The rainfall about 900 mm annually, very irregular in distribution. Snow also melts and is caught on the terraces. On the opposite side of the canyon the plantings of pines were made in 1910. Population in this region more than 100 persons per square Km. The reforested land is rented to the natives, the Kabyles, who like trees. These sorts not supposed to be cut. Natives allowed to keep cattle; must sell sheep and goats. Encouragement of grass has not been very successful. Hope that with soil improvement following terraces, the grass will be better. At time of our visit the fruit trees were 2 months old; they had been planted when the winter rains had moistened the soil. No artificial watering given.
