December 1, 1937. 'World View', Matopos Hills, Southern Rhodesia: This was the place chosen by John Cecil Rhodes for his burial ground and his body was transferred here in 1902 after his death in Capetown. It is marked by the simple black slab in the center of the circle of boulders. To the right of the boulder group is another slab showing the grave of Sir Leander Starr Jameson, Rhodes's physician and administrative confederate, who was buried here in 1920. Near the extreme left of the picture is the third grave in this consecrated ground, the resting place for those who deserve well of their country, and here lies Sir Charles Patrick John Coghlan, the first prime minister of Southern Rhodesia, who was buried in 1930. The large white marble structure is the Shangani Memorial, also known as the Allen Wilson Memorial, where Major Allen Wilson and 33 men who died in a battle on December 4, 1893, are interred. 5000 feet. 06:50.
