November 23, 1937. Groot Drakenstein: A near view of the old Dutch colonial homestead that serves as a residence for the Pickstone farm. The story of Mr. Pickstone is one of romantic adventure. Born in Wales, he served later in the Northwest Mounted Police, was cook on an expedition through the Grand Canyon, settled in California and learned citrus fruit growing at an early period in its west coast development, migrated to South Africa, and entered the service of Cecil Rhodes, establishing a series of citrus farms, one of which ultimately was given to him by Rhodes in reward of his work. The old gentleman, now in his eighties, still lives here, but his son is carrying on the responsibilities. The latter recently returned to California to take a 'post graduate' course in fruit growing and was married to a San Francisco girl. They have returned and are in active charge of the work here. [Both father and son died in 1939]. 1400 feet. 10:45.
