December 12, 1937. Mt Kilimanjaro: Composite group showing from right to left Mawenzi, the saddle, and Kibo. Mawenzi is 17,290 feet and Kibo rises to 19,590 feet. These pictures were made soon after sunrise, yet they are marred by the cloud cap which we found over the crater of Kibo when we had climbed to its height. A month later we returned to Moshi, made a second unsuccessful photographic excursion, and on a third attempt found the mountain entirely in the clear. All three flights carried us above 19,000 feet and on the last one we rose to 23,000. This group of pictures serves to orient many of the later views. 12900 feet. 06:17.
