November 23, 1937. Beaufort West, C.P.: A good general view of the town looking toward the northeast. This is an important station on the Great North Road between Capetown and Pretoria and is served by both road and railroad, the workshops of the latter appearing at the left of the picture. In the background is the Great Escarpment and while drinking water is brought in by pipe from an upper reservoir, the irrigation for the needs of the town is obtained from a small basin within its borders. The value of a water supply is well indicated by the barren appearance of the native compounds at the middle right, where no provision for irrigation has been made. c. 3700 feet. 15:40.
