Photographer's Note	November 23, 1937. Junction of the Riet and Modder Rivers, twenty-five miles south of Kimberley. An unusually clear picture showing the point of junction of two rivers and a weir (top of picture) which has been thrown across one for water storage. Two small farms are seen but most of the region is barren. Numerous young erosion patterns are seen breaking down the banks of the river. The height and declivity of these banks can be judged by the shadow of the railroad bridge. The railroad station is Modder River. The motor road makes its crossing here by means of pavement laid in the river bed, which amounts to little more than a ford. Most of these details appear in the 'Topographical map of the Union of South Africa,' sheet 7 (1:500,000). 10300 feet. 17:27.
