January 8, 1938. Near Eldoret, Kenya: Numerous grass fires (produced intentionally) seen while flying between Kitale and Nairobi. The view is to the southwest toward Lake Victoria. The practice of grass-burning is generally comdemned because of the heavy smoke nuisance, the danger of destructive, unmanageable fires, and the damage done to the cover which permits soil erosion. Although the European attitude is against it, the natives, continue, of course, to engage in a practice which has always been a custom. 8800 feet. 15:23.
