Photographer's Note	Massif de l'Aigoual, North of Montpellier, Southern France. 4 May 47. Plus X. Col de la Sereyrede near Lesperou, the lunch stop. Similar. Hotel & Aigoual observatory in the distance. In this region in 65 years about 60,000 hectares were deforested and bare from sheep raising and burning. Because the methods of management were wrong. Now cattle are encouraged and land has been exchanged. Aid has been given to drive out the wild hogs; hunts organized. Some belief that the statistics are incorrect, but even so that they give some indication of the conditions. For the reforestation beech is the best native tree; some conifers also used, especially the Douglas "pine" higher. About the Observatory Pinus montana and several other pines used. Also Abies alba and/or pectinata. The best trees are the native ones, but the pasturage is too severe. Probably a mixture best, more beech on the south slopes, more Abies in the northern ones.
