From time immemorial the Huang Ho, or Yellow River, has been known as 'China's Sorrow,' or the 'Scourge of the Sons of Han,' because it frequently breaks through its dikes and disgorges its silt-laden waters over many thousands of square miles bringing desolation to the land and famine to its people.
