Description	The establishment of the American Concession was never given official sanction or recognition by the United States Government. In spite of this, it was incorporated with the British Concession in 1863 to form the [Shanghai] International Settlement [the Bund] which was administered by an elected Municipal Council (p. 223).’ ‘. . . the International Settlement [the Bund] encompassed the commercial core [of Shanghai] (p. 224).’
