Photographer's Note	Two elderly Chinese gentlemen in Yankai look into the camera. The four children in the background peer curiously at what is going on. The men are sitting on a stone ledge near a set of stairs. Building walls are paneled as was the case with most buildings. The gentlemen enjoyed an American cigarette, just as most Chinese did. They were the long gowns of that era and they both cultivate some interesting beards and mustaches. Because of their age they sit with dignity, enjoying the respect that is due them in Chinese society. The character lines in their faces speak of the lives they lived. They both wore typical Chinese footwear of cotton sandals. Most younger Chinese children went without shoes as is evident on the left.
