Photographer's Note	A typical farm house in Yankai Valley is shown in this particular photo. The building walls of mud brick were extra thick. They supported roofs of blue/gray tiles. The curved tiles were laid over poles that ran from the ridge pole at the top to the edge of the roof. Inverted tiles nestled between the poles and formed a tight seal against leakage and acted as a trough for water run-off. Rice bundles and woven baskets are at the left. The straw pile consists of rice straw. The curious farmer wears dress typical of the area. Laundry is being dried on a bush to the right. Dogs were ever present as in this photo. The loft almost concealed had openings of wood. Wood that ran up and down with openings of 3' to 4'. This permitted air to circulate in and out since climate was mild. This area was on a latitude with Miami, Florida. The rice in the compound area indicates that the harvest had just recently taken place.
