Photographer's Note	This photo was taken to illustrate the brick laying pattern in the construction of this mud building. The bricks were laid on edge and then flat. Note that two rows of edge-laid brick were stacked on several rows of flat-laid brick. The edge brick required one row to row the thickness of the wall. The flat brick lay two deep to form the base visible in the wall pattern. The roof tiles are backed and laid over wooden poles that run from the ridgepole down to the bottom edge of the roof. These were 1/2 round tiles. Between each row was a row of quarter curved tiles that were laid with the curved side down and overlapped from top to bottom edge. This formed a waterproof seal and a trough for carrying water off the roof. On each end tiles were laid so water dropped off the edges. Note two water buffalo among the wooden carts in this courtyard. A common sight when the buffalo were not pressed into the job of pulling some heavy load, or plow or rake or cart. The smaller roof over what looks like a lean-to was the entrance to this farm house in the area.
