Photographer's Note	A farmer growing tobacco. He is checking the leaves as the plants are reaching maturity. (Yankai Valley was a prosperous farming area… permitting crops to be grown the year round.) These tobacco leaves, like others, were harvested and placed in crosshatched bamboo frames which were then clamped on edge in a wooden horizontal vise-like holder, forming and almost solid block of tobacco about 8' wide, the length of the leaf. Approximately 1/2' protruded above the top edge of the vise, a wooden plane with a sharp metal blade insert was set into tracks atop the tobacco and two men moved this is cutting tool back and forth across the compressed leaves, shredding them for use. As the first level was shredded the leaves would be moved up and re-clamped until the entire block was shredded. The tobacco was quite strong when smoked.
