Photographer's Note	Note in the background to the right is a building that was made by the Chinese of mud brick and tile. They were typical of the barracks built by the Chinese for the American soldier stationed there. This depicts a worker scraping ground brought to the base for probably working on roads or pathways, or for mixing with mud and water for work on the buildings. The walls of mud brick are first put up and then plastered with a mixture of ground and water. The ox cart is of wood; some bamboo is incorporated in the bed of this particular cart. Note the harnessing of the animal. This is one of a series of carts that came to unload ground and loose material in place on the cart. Note buffalo hide in the front of the cart, center of the picture. This was used for protection against the elements. His straw hat is typical of this area. His tunic and pantaloons, short type of pants, were rolled up for convenient working.
