Photographer's Note	This shows one of the roads leading to the tower. There were four entrances to the city, which was walled. This is one of the streets coming to that area. They were fanned out in four different directions and terminated here, where most of the commercial activity took place. The buildings, such as the tower, were dedicated to prominent Chinese or event of the time. The stalls in the foreground were set up quickly. The parasols shown were of oil paper. This was a common sight in the market place because it provided good protection from the elements and at the same time acted as a stand and protection for the merchandise. Folded, it was easy to carry. Note the gentleman in the center of the picture coming toward us. He wears a tunic, long dress-like garment and pants. A woman leans over at the far right to pick up a stick - she has bound feet, wears a tunic, and of course, a head bandana. The horse in the background evidently belongs to one of the merchants who brought his merchandise in to sell. Many items that were sold in this square were brought by horseback from the countryside.
