Luliang
on a
street
leading
to the
town's
center
,
four
women
set
up
a
stand
to
sell
cloth
.
Dyed
in
various
colors
(blue
,
black
, and
other
dark
colors)
,
it
was
folded
into
bolts
and
stacked
up
.
Some
embroidered
pieces
can
be
seen
in the
basket
at the
right
. The
baskets
have been
turned
bottom
side
up
for
use
as a
display
stand
.
Decorative
and
functional
, these
baskets
are
woven
of
bamboo
. This
construction
and
material
makes
them
sturdy
, and
light
weight
. They are
designed
for
carrying
with a
shoulder
pole
. The
two
ladies
on the
right
wore
white
tunics
and
deep
red
head
coverings
. On the
far
right
the
woman
was
threading
a
needle
. She
became
quite
upset
when
she
realized
her
picture
was
being
taken
.
Many
objected
, and at
times
his their
faces
from the
camera
. The
man
in the
foreground
is
trying
to
bargain
price
with the
lady
in the
center
. In the
background
a
Chinese
man
in an
ankle
length
tunic
and
leather
cap
looks
on. To the
left
of him
is
an
American
military
vehicle
.
