Description
Title
Luliang
(China)
,
Buddhist
temple
architectural
detail
Caption
Yunnan Province, China 1943 - 1945
Part of Set
1943-1945 Bert Krawczyk Photos of China during World War II
Date of Photograph
between
1943
and
1945
Photographer's Note
These
two
photos
comprise
a
wall
some
30'
high
and
about
the
same
width
. The
wall
backed
up
a
series
of
(3)
20'
high
large
bronze
Buddha
in
Luliang
. In
other
words
this
wall
was the
back
of the
main
worship
area
.
It
stretched
from
temple
floor
to
ceiling
and was
made
of
plaster
that was
brilliantly
colored
.
Hundreds
of
smaller
figures
filled
the
area
that
looked
like
some
heavenly
setting
. The
lady
seated
on a
white
elephant
was the
dominating
central
figure
on the
left
. A
gold
goddess-like
figure
on the
right
dominated
the
wall
. In the
swirling
background
you
can
pick
out
quite
a
few
figures
, at
various
angles
and in
different
dress
.
Most
figures
seemed
suspended
in
space
. An
altar
in the
center
of the
wall
, but
looking
as if
it
were to the
right
,
is
ornately
carved
. The
usual
lit
lamp
suspended
from the
ceiling
,
swings
in the
breeze
. An
urn
for
incense
sticks
sits
on the
altar
. The
fence
kept
people
from
touching
the
background
wall
. The
closeness
of the
wall
to the
doors
(3')
leading
outside
made
it
difficult
to
obtain
a
decent
photo
because
of its
size
.
