Description	Harrison Forman, photographer and journalist, writes in this diary about his travels in Afghanistan. He begins his journey at the Khyber Pass in Pakistan crossing the border to Afghanistan. Forman describes the road passing through, the surrounding landscape, and the culture of the Afghan people. He makes his way to Jalalabad, then Kabul. There, Forman describes the streets, buildings, people and their clothing, and mountaineers with weapons. He also talks about the local police and transportation. Forman writes at length about the practice of secluding women from public observation by their use of veils and other concealing clothing. He describes the culture and treatment of women, mentioning specific actions such as prohibiting attention from men other than family members and segregating seating on buses. Forman notes Afghan women's efforts to advocate abolishing the practice of purdah and wonders about the influence of American women supporting the Afghan women's cause. Forman then talks about the local bazaars, the different shops and sellers, as well as the process of bartering. He leaves Kabul and travels to Bamiyan through the mountains of the Hindu Kush. On the way, Forman describes the change in culture from that in Kabul, especially the women without veils, with braided hair and colorful clothing. Forman writes about the 'cave city' and his experience of climbing up a cliff into a niche to stand on a beheaded statue of a Buddha. He continues along the Bamiyan River stopping at small villages to drink tea and eat at local restaurants. Forman interviews a provincial governor, Ismael Khan, who he accompanies on fishing and hunting trips.

The diaries were digitized to provide research materials for the Forman's negatives scanned as part of the NEH grant project "Saving and Sharing the AGS Library's Historic Nitrate Negative Images."
