Title
Usguli
village
in
Upper
Svanetia
Date of Photograph
1929
Photographer
Field, William O. (William Osgood), 1904-1994
Photographer's Note
“The
uppermost
valley
of the
Ingur
River
leading
to the
village
of
Ushgul
[variation
of
Usguli]
was a
very
remote
area
where
few
foreigners
had been. There were
several
different
communities
. The
people
here
worked
all
year
round
. In
many
locations
, the
men
had
become
the
warriors
and
tended
to
just
stand
around
with
spears
looking
impressive
, but here
everybody
had to
work
because
life
was
extremely
hard
. This
is
the
lower
village
of
Ushgul
. A
very
prominent
part
of
each
village
was the
siege
towers
. These
towers
in
Swanetia
date
back
to the
fourteenth
of
fifteenth
century
and were
built
for
defense
against
foreign
attacks
as
well
as
protection
during
the
devastating
blood
feuds
that at
times
were
rampant
in
many
of these
communities
.
Almost
anything
you
did
in
courtship
would
antagonize
somebody
. The
siege
towers
were
very
much
in
use
until
the
Bolsheviks
came
in and
helped
restore
order
.
Nov
3/5
,
1929.”
