Photographer's Note	"German's house with Ushba in the distance, not the highest peak in the area but a very spectacular [mountain]. German lived in what was known as a European-type house, meaning it had windows and it was made of wood instead of being a walled enclave like most of the people lived in. There was a chimney so the fire wasn't in the middle of the dirt floor, and his cattle were in a separate building rather than in the basement. It was more comfortable than most of the houses. One night at this priest's home while I, an American, was there with Muzahan, an ex-prince, two members of the Communist Party labor union came through and were guests for the night. That was the kind of combination that couldn't have happened anywhere except in the more remote and somewhat less rigid areas of the Soviet Union. In Moscow and most parts of the USSR such a group would not have had any contact with each other. It was a most unusual combination but everyone got along well. Oct 29, 1929."
