Description
Title
Non-traditional
style
house
in
Svanetia
Date of Photograph
1929
Photographer
Field, William O. (William Osgood), 1904-1994
Photographer's Note
"
German's
house
with
Ushba
in the
distance
, not the
highest
peak
in the
area
but a
very
spectacular
[mountain]
.
German
lived
in what was
known
as a
European-type
house
,
meaning
it
had
windows
and
it
was
made
of
wood
instead
of
being
a
walled
enclave
like
most
of the
people
lived
in. There was a
chimney
so
the
fire
wasn't
in the
middle
of the
dirt
floor
, and his
cattle
were in a
separate
building
rather
than in the
basement
.
It
was
more
comfortable
than
most
of the
houses
.
One
night
at this
priest's
home
while
I
, an
American
, was there with
Muzahan
, an
ex-prince
,
two
members
of the
Communist
Party
labor
union
came
through
and were
guests
for the
night
. That was the
kind
of
combination
that
couldn't
have
happened
anywhere
except
in the
more
remote
and
somewhat
less
rigid
areas
of the
Soviet
Union
. In
Moscow
and
most
parts
of the
USSR
such
a
group
would not have had any
contact
with
each
other
.
It
was a
most
unusual
combination
but
everyone
got
along
well
.
Oct
29
,
1929.
