Artist Bio	Chenggan Liu, born in Zhejiang, China, was a renowned bibliophile in the late Qing dynasty. Liu was certified by passing county-level imperial exams in 1905. He became rich by inheriting the family property around 1899. He spent his wealth on purchasing a large number of ancient books in 1911. Later, he built a library called Jiaye Tang to store his collection. Besides collecting books, Liu was interested in editing, cataloging, and block printing. Most of his works was created not for profit but to benefit students.
作者生平	劉承幹，浙江吳興人。字翰怡，號貞一，光緒三十一年（1905）年考中秀才。祖父富甲一方，劉承幹繼承部份財富，收購宋元古書。劉承幹藏書豐富，建藏書樓以收藏收購古籍。劉承幹不但藏書，自己也嘗試編輯，分類書籍並雕版刻書送與學人。

Main Text	The bamboo sprout in the Yibin county of Sichuan, China, is the most delicious sprout in the area of the Chengdu plain (at the west of Sichuan basin). With combination of sweet-bitter taste, crispy bamboo sprouts bring a rich flavor. People would not get heartburn even if they had a large amount of it because of its soft and fine fibers. Bamboo's bitterness actually benefits health. The more bitterness you have, the healthier your body becomes. Relations between the bitterness and human body is like those between loyal political advisers and a government because true and beneficial advice may not always be pleasant. Yibin's bamboo absorbs purity and spirits of mountains so it can survive from storms and pollution. It can serve as an appetizer or a side dish. No other bamboo can match them. People in Sichuan always say that bitter bamboo sprouts are hard to swallow. [incomplete text]
釋文	僰道苦筍，冠冕兩川。甘脆愜當，小苦而及成味。溫潤稹密，多啗而不疾人。蓋苦而有味，如忠諫之可活國。多而不害，如舉士而皆得賢。是其鍾江山之秀氣。故能深雨露而避風煙。食肴以之開道，酒客為之流涎。彼桂玫之與夢汞，又安得與之同年。蜀人曰：「苦筍不可食，食之動痼疾，使人萎而瘠。」
