Guifen Feng, born in Jiangsu, China, was a renowned scholar in Qing dynasty. In 1840, he served as an imperial scholar and became one of Zexu Lin's students (1785-1850). Feng assisted in organizing army to fight the Taiping Rebellion in 1853. After that, he worked as a political adviser to Hongzhang Li (1823-1901) and as a proponent of Self-Strengthening Movement (an institutional reform of Qing dynasty from 1861 to 1895).
