Jian Zhang, known as Chi-chih (courtesy name) and Se-an(pseudonym), was a scholar ranking number one in imperial examinations at the end of Qing dynasty. Zhang was a successful businessman in textile and salt industry. He also built hundreds of schools to promote education. Zhang was also a political leader, advocating an idea of “saving the country by enterprising and education.” He was a supporter of constitutional monarchy but his political orientation shifts from that to a republic after Hsinhai Revolution (1911-1912, a revolution against Qing dynasty).
