Artist Bio	Shen, Yinmo, born in Zhejian, China, was a renowned poet and calligrapher at the beginning of Republic of China. Shen was a central figure of New Cultural Movement initiated in 1910s (a movement supported democracy as well as science and was opposed against Confucianism). He established a deep friendship with other movement supporters like Duxiu Chen (1879-1942, a distinguished scholar and anti-imperial activist). Shen became interested in theories of calligraphy in his late life. To promote calligraphy, he founded the first calligraphy organization in Shanghai, China in 1961.

Description	This Shen’s calligraphic project is collected by Mianzhong Yang. Shen extracted Yu Lu’s (Wuguan Lu, 1125-1210) work, “Little Garden”, a set of four seven-character poems. The work is very rare and valuable because it was completed and preserved during Chongqing anti-Japanese War Period (at the end of 1930s). I wrote down this note in particular in memory of Shen. Tse Tsung Chow noted at Madison, Wisconsin, on April 22nd, 2004.
描述	右乃吾湘人楊綿仲先生所存之件也, 沈尹默先生手書陸游小園七絕四首, 書法精美殊為難得, 此當為沈先生在重慶抗戰時所書, 尤為難得. 特題此數語存作紀念, 周策縱敬誌2004年四月二十二日記于美國威州陌地生.
Main Text	Grass in my little garden spreads to neighbors’ lawn. Many mulberry trees grow along perimeters of the garden. A path meanders through dense tree canopy. I lay down on the bed, reading Yuanming Tao’s poems. Before finishing a volume of it, the weather starts to drizzle. I put the book aside and hoe the garden before the drizzle turns into heavy rain. After facing severe challenges and hardship in my life, I let my restless mind calm down through gardening. Everyday weather is unpredictable since people started harvesting wheat. In a village where I live, farmers are busy in raising silkworms in each household. Doves (Streptopelia) coo everywhere. Newly-placed rice shoots are almost submerged by extensive irrigating water. I was traveling all over the world but ironically, I am a local farmer now, learning how to prepare fields for spring planting from a senior neighbor. When I was young, I am proud of my career. My mettle can scare a fierce invader. As I age, I found there is actually another pleasure of a withdrawing lifestyle. Having handsome horses and treasured swords is just like a unrealistic fantasy vanishing like a dream. I rather feed cattle, knock their horns and sing songs lamenting my unrecognized talent.
釋文	小園煙草接鄰家，桑柘陰陰一徑斜。臥讀陶詩未終卷，又乘微雨去鋤瓜。歷盡危機歇盡狂，殘年惟有付耕桑。麥秋天氣朝朝變，蠶月人家處處忙。村南村北鵓鴣聲，水刺新秧漫漫平。行遍天涯千萬裏，卻從鄰父學春耕。少年壯氣吞殘虜，晚覺丘樊樂事多。駿馬寶刀俱一夢，夕陽閑和飯牛歌。
