Many warriors accompanied the Grand Living Buddha on his pilgrimage to Lhasa. In their sheepskin robes, fox or lambskin hats and high boots, they swaggered about with long rifles slung across their shoulders or with deadly twenty-five foot lances in their hands (p.8).
