'The Most Blessed One, Jamyan Shetpa, (pronounced Jamv Japa ) spiritual and temporal ruler of Lhabrang Gomba and a great portion of northeastern Tibet. He is a keen far-sighted youngster, gifted with more than average intelligence and ability. A jack-knife and fountain pen interested him, but the prize winner was the pocket lighter I brought out, which nearly scared the life out of him when it sparked and burst into flame at a touch of the release button. He must have it, he insisted, and gave me a beautiful little bronze idol in exchange.'
