'The principle dancers of the first group of characters in the Black Hat Dance represent the red, black, yellow and blue Heavenly Kings, or Guardians of the Universe. They are accompanied by a retinue of demons and devils, including the King of the Dead, whose terrifying appearance fills the spectators with a grim foreboding of the horrors of Hell and Purgatory.'
